This what Isa says when he wants me to pick him up by the ankles and swing him upsidedown. “Again! More Again!”
He’s also started saying “Palma” and “Eduardo,” but for Eduardo it sounds more like “Enwarno.”
He’s also getting into wearing hats!

What a full day! Isa had his swimming class this morning where he practiced his kicking and bubble-blowing with the rest of the kids. Then he took a big nap and afterwards played video games Da Da. He even gave us an improv bongo performance. Just look at those lightening fast hands!
Isa surprised me tonight by unexpectedly eating a brand new dish. I made a Moroccan Chickpea & Lentil soup for Eduardo and me, thinking I’d make something else for Isa’s dinner. But when he saw us eating our bowls, he put his hand right in and pulled out a chickpea which he popped into his mouth. He loved it so much he took a few more fist fulls making happy “mmmm” sounds as he went. What a pleasure to see him enjoy the same foods we do.

Maria pointed out that Isa’s 7th tooth is coming in–a little white bump emerging on the bottom row, left side. All the more to bite us with! Isa got annoyed with Eduardo the other day when he tried to get his ipod back so Isa bit down on his finger so hard he actually broke the skin. Isa is a lovely, sweet, happy boy, but if you try to take his “toy” away, watch out for your fingers! He’s managed to bite me, Eduardo and Maria on more than one occasion.
Isa has now learned how to give kisses thanks to the picture above. It’s the last page of one of his favorite books, “A Pocket for Corduroy.” Whenever we get to this page, I always nuzzle noses with Isa. So now when he sees this, or any time you mention it, he scrunches up his nose, puckers his lips and leans in for a “besito.” There are the occasional casualties, however. Isa doesn’t always lean in gently and in his effort to give you a kiss and he may end up clocking you in the head. Eduardo got the double whammy the other night when Isa tried to give him a kiss. He hit the back of his head on the wall while unsuccessfully trying to escape Isa’s fast approaching forehead.
Another favorite book of Isa’s is the”Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
When we get to the last page with the butterfly I always hold the book up and flap the pages so that the butterfly “flies” away. Isa enjoys it so much that now he makes the book fly away over his head himself whenever we read it. Actually, he makes all the books fly away now, butterfly or not.
Isa’s number one FAVORITE book, however, is a vintage copy of “Tickle me Elmo” Golden Book. He pulls this one off the shelf and reads it by himself all the time.
Sometimes he just stares mesmerized at the back cover:
He loves the details of all the characters. There’s a page in here where Elmo makes funny faces, so of course, I always make funny faces too. Now Isa makes them with me–he sticks his tongue out then looks to me to see what face I’ll come up with.

Isa is changing by leaps and bounds lately. In the last week he’s learned how to “throw” a ball and “brush” his teeth. Today he was able to put the right shapes into the musical shape sorter for the first time. Usually he just empties it and hands the circle, square and triangle to me one at a time as a cue that he wants me to put them into the sorter. But today, I guided his hand to the correct opening and let him release the shape into the slot. He was thrilled that he was able to get the shapes in, but he got flustered when he didn’t quiet position the triangle correctly and it got stuck before finally sliding down. He let out a frustrated yelp and shook his hands in the universal body language of “Ughh!” Poor little guy–caught in the gap between the determination of his will and the cooperation of his body.
Isa is also becoming a great mimic. He notices my cleaning around the house a lot and he always wants to get into the action. He’s especially fascinated by the broom and dustpan. So today, as usual, he followed me around watching me sweep the floors and then sweep up the debris into the dustpan. Then he saw me open the kitchen trashcan and brush the dirt into the garbage. Before the garbage lid closed, he followed up behind me and put his hand out over the trash and shook off the imaginary dust that he had collected with his fingers and when the lid closed he patted it down for emphasis. A chip off the old block!
We can also add a few more words to his vocabulary list:
Plus I could have sworn I heard him say “De Nada” the other day when I handed him his juice, but I’m waiting to see if he says it again. He also says something that sounds like “I did it;” it’s really more like “I didi.” We’re not sure what he means, but we always respond saying, “Yes, you did it!”

At 13 months, here is a list of Isa’s vocabulary:
Coming in at number one, however, is Isa’s first and still favorite expression:
He’s been making this sound since he was just a couple of months old. Eduardo and I can not for the life of us figure out where this comes from or what it means. Granted, we are a fairly liberal family, but I don’t think we talk about the former Vice President any more than your typical American household. Perhaps Isa just never got over the travesty of the stolen 2000 election. (There must have been some coverage where ever he was at the time) Or perhaps he’s just keen on that particular collection of sounds. Well, whatever it is, it’s a mystery. And it doesn’t seem to be used following any consistent grammatical rules. Isa’s proclaimed it as a noun when pointing at something, a greeting when entering a room, a salutation when leaving, a question with inflection and an exclamation when thoroughly excited. If anyone has any theories as to what this magical phrase “Al Gore” could mean, please share them.
